Science Laboratory

NIWA scientists requested an extension to their existing mass spectrometry laboratory to accommodate a new mass spectrometer and associated equipment. The original laboratory building was constructed inside an 1970’s iconic 5 storey concrete building. The only way to add on to such a building was by way of a separated “pod” structure similar to the existing building entrance. The tripartite rhythm of the existing building was maintained in the fenestration and cross wall locations. A butyl rubber clad “tunnel” or “airlock” was used to connect with the existing building.

Extensive work benches were provided along with a cable tray network of cable and gas pipes. The laboratories were kept light and airy with excellent natural light supplemented by well chosen low energy fluorescent fittings. A hoist for lifting in nitrogen gas cylinders essential to the success of the laboratory is incorporated in one of the bays.
